Interview with a comedian guy

If I have mentioned this before, it might be because sometimes I think things in my mind and then assume everyone knows it already. From my observations I have made one thing is true, comedians are doing it for themselves. Case in point, Peter Sserwanga, a local Cape Town comic. He has taken some initiative and is going around interviewing some of the other local comics in short videos he is releasing them on the net. Below is one with Liam Bento.

I always love seeing this kind of dedication from comedians. You can see some more on Peter’s youtube channel here...

Comedy for Breadline Africa

Time to get your laughs on and do your bit for charity. Dig deep in those pockets and support the Breadline Africa Comedy event happening on Thursday 27 October 2011 at the Grand Daddy Hotel on Long Street.

October 2011 – Comedians John Vlismas and Kurt Schoonraad, will be joined by top magician and entertainer, Marcel Oudejans, for an evening of laughter, fun and fundraising at the annual Breadline Africa comedy event. We are hoping to send more than 1 500 children from disadvantaged communities to the beach for a fun day in December, with funds raised during the evening and support received from overseas donors.
“Despite living so close to the coastline, most of these children have never seen the sea,” Director of Breadline Africa, Tim Smith said. “The outing will leave a lasting memory for the children, many of whom are exposed to poverty, crime and abuse on an almost daily basis. The comedy show will help in our efforts to raise money for this special annual outing.”
The outrageously talented trio will present their routines at the Grand Daddy Hotel in Long Street on 27 October 2011 from 6:30pm. Co-founder and presenter of the recently launched Taxi Radio, Grant Jansen, will MC the evening.
Book now for this exclusive event – limited tickets available. Tickets cost R250 per person and will include a complimentary drink on arrival and snacks during the evening – all proceeds will go towards the seaside event. For bookings call Linda on 021 418 0322 or email her at marketing@breadlineafrica.org.za. For more information on Breadline Africa, visit www.breadlineafrica.org.

The sporadic nature of the internet

Some of you might have asked what happened to the three times a week blog posts from High On Comedy every week with out fail. Well loyal readers, I have sad news. This past weekend, the High On Comedy office(my flat) was burgled.

It is okay, no one got hurt, but my laptop plus some other things were stolen. Meaning my access to blogger has been a bit difficult at times. But not to worry, I have not lost my love for humor, and in fact, humor is one of few things keeping me sane at this moment.

So just sit back, relax, and wait for everything on this side to get sorted. I am still very active on twitter, but for the next few weeks or so, the blog won't be updated as regularly. We hope to be back to full steam soon.

And just like that...

...it's the weekend!

Keeping with the Werner Weber theme for this week, we have another short clip from his stand up show, Devolution, The theory of stupid. Enjoy.

Have a great weekend, and remember to aim!

Werner Weber’s Devolution, The Theory of Stupid.

I have spoken about Werner before, I have mentioned his show, hell, I have even had an interview with him. What I have not done is talked properly about his show. Well that wasn’t really possible until last week Wednesday when I hopped (like a rabbit?) to On Broadway, took my seat in the second row (weirdly called A. This first row is AA and the third row is B. Theatre logic escapes me) and waited for the musician to end his opening gig.

The show opened with a video clip starring Werner himself and Angel Blythe as the ‘Dumb Chick’. Werner plays the narrator of a documentary trying to do the intro but the dumb chick keeps interrupting rudely in her quest for the ladies (also the loo). Angel disappears off screen and then comes on stage and interacts with the Werner on the screen. This serves as an interesting way to introduce continuity to the show before Werner disappears off screen and is introduced and we are ready to go.

Werner starts by talking about his personal travels through life and his observations about the human race. How we treat activities like buying condoms when we are younger compared to how we handle it as we get older. As well as how our bodies change over time, as do our medical checkups. Werner has a “pull no punches” approach to comedy which I find very enjoyable. Although I’m sure not everyone wants to hear about proctology exams and lesbians who make their own tampons out of Rizla papers and string. Regardless, the first half of the show was met with laughter from everyone in the crowd. I was brought to tears a number of times. Werner was on fire. Then he decided to call for an interval, rather abruptly.

When the second half began it felt like he had lost some of his fire and the crowd was a bit quieter. It seemed like he was struggling a bit to recover, but he did as soon as he started speaking about his three dogs with their distinct personalities. From there Werner had his fire back and the show was saved. Devolution is a new show and still needs some work. It felt like it could have been shorter and the way the interval was announced was a bit too hasty. The opening bit was brilliant though and very well timed. It will be interesting to see this show again after this initial run to see what Werner, a fairly new comic, has adjusted and improved. When Devolution has another run, I will be there to see it indeed to see the improvements.
